As a starting point, all search engines use the dmoz data base and then re-order their results. Go out to the Open Directory Project and hit the suggest URL link to get listed. It will take 6 months, but you want to be in that data base.

The data base is free, so you could start your own search engine based on those results. Google became successful because they came up with an algorithm that returned good results, and in the early days you could buy your way to a better ranking. |
