If your running a web site use Google Site Maps to get your site spidered. Using Google Page Creator as a web site will also get you in the listing. Use this link to get your site listed on Google; Add your URL to Google.
Don't fall for the scam; we will list your site in 5000 search engines for $5, your wasting your money
As a starting point, all search engines use the dmoz data base and then re-order their results. Go out to the Open Directory Project and hit the suggest URL link to get listed. It will take 6 months, but you want to be in that data base.

Really, basically all search engines use the free data base offered by dmoz. The power of the engine is how they order the results to return pages from your search. The data base is free, so you could start your own search engine based on those results. Google became successful because they came up with an algorithm that returned good results, and in the early days you could buy your way to a better ranking.
