MIL-DTL-5846: Chromel and Alumel Thermocouple Electrical Wire. [14, 16, 18, 20 & 24AWG]
Thermal Couple wire is a wire pair with each wire made of a different metal.
The examples below are the wires defined in MIL-DTL-5846.
metallic Composition & Color code | |||
Positive | Negative | Positive | Negative |
Iron (+) | Constantan (-) | Black | Yellow |
Copper (+) | Constantan (-) | Red | Yellow |
Chromel (+) | Alumel (-) | White | Green |
Constantan wire is a copper-nickel alloy; 55% copper, 45% nickel.
Alumel wire is a metal alloy of 95% nickel, 2% manganese, 2% aluminium and 1% silicon.
Chromel wire is an alloy of 90% nickel and 10% chromium.
When Alumel wire is combined with chromel wire the result is a type K thermocouple.
