2N2484 Temperature-Power Derating Curve

Use the Graph to determine how much to derate power [wattage] based on ambient operational temperature [Ta]. The chart indicates that 2000C is the maximum ambient operating temperature for a 2N2484. There are three different curves for the 2N2484 in the graph. The top curve is a not to exceed or damage to the 2N2484 will result. The curve below that represents the maximum operating limits of the 2N2484. While the bottom two gray curves show the correct derating of the 2N2484, with the lowest curve providing the longest life for the 2N2484.

Temperature-Power derating is a standard design practice for electrical engineers.

Refer to MIL-PRF-19500/376; Semiconductor Transistor, NPN, Low-Power, Types 2N2484, 2N2484UA, 2N2484UB, 2N2484UBC, JAN, JANTX, JANTXV, JANS.
This specification covers the TO-18 Through-hole Package.

2N2484 Maximum Ratings, TO-18:
Collector Emitter Voltage = 60 volts dc [Vce]
Collector Base Voltage = 60 volts dc [Vcb]
Emitter Base Voltage = 6 volts dc [Vbe]
Collector Current = 50mA dc [Ic]
Collector Current [peak] = 100mA dc [Ic]
Base Current [peak] = 50mA dc [Ib]
Current Gain = 100 to 500 [hfe], Ic = 10uA, Vce = 5 volts
Transition Frequency = 80MHz [Ic = 500mA, Vce = 5V, F = 100MHz]
Power Dissipation 250C = 360mW
Operating Temperature = -65 to +2000C

The 2N2484 transistor is still in production. With a number of suppliers stocking the part. Which company the 2N2484 is purchased from determines the minimum quantity and price. However, in general the 2N2484 will cost around a dollar, assuming the part may be procured in quantities of one. As with any component the price drops if the purchase is made in bulk. Note that some distributors add their own distinguishing prefix to the part number. Note there is at least one manufacturer that offers the 2N2484 in a TO-92 package, in that case with a part number of PN2484. Although the basic electrical characteristic are the same, the derating curve shown above only covers the part in the TO-18 can. There are a number of companies that produce the standard TO-18 2N2484 transistor, all versions should be lead-free and RoHS compliant.

Editor note; there is no point to adding the revision level to the mil-spec used above, as it could change at any time.

The qualification levels for this part are as follows, although for a vast number of readers will not mean anything; JAN, JANTX, JANTXV, JANS, JANSM, JANSD, JANSP, JANSL, JANSR, JANSF, JANSG, JANSH JANHCA, JANHCB, JANKCA, JANKCB, JANKCM, JANKCD, JANKCP, JANKCL, JANKCR, JANKCF, JANKCG, and JANKCH.

The surface mount UB package shown to the left is a part of the military specification listed, but is not included in the curve for derating purposes. The surface mount part has its own derating curve which is not included here, primarily because the odds of that version being used is low. However the point is to show that the SMD package is completely different from the TO-18 metal can.
