Heat Sink/Fan Combo Manufacturers

Companies which produce Fans are listed on the Fan Manufacturers page. In many cases heat-sinks with an attached fan are referred to as coolers, or CPU coolers when used on a processor. A cpu cooler is processor specific and are only designed for one type of micro-processor. The cpu cooler is designed to fit the size of the micro-processor and to fit inside a defined area inside the PC chassis. CPU coolers will specify which micro-processor manufacturer [Intel, AMD] the device will operate on, and which processor style, normally referred as the socket type. The processor socket type will define the number of pins used by the processor and the sub-family of processor style.
Another factor to consider is Mother Board style, as the processor location changes position in an ATX motherboard or BTX mother board. Many companies assume an ATX style Mother Board. Chip-Set coolers are used on North-Bridge and South-Bridge ICs. VGA coolers, or video card coolers are used to enhance the heatsinks supplied with video cards. HDD Coolers are designed to function over-top of Hard Disk Drives [HDD]. Normally the mounting bracket which mounts the fan to the hard drive acts as the heat sink, and the fan completes the cooler assembly.

A Passive heat-sink relates only to a heat-sink.
An active heat-sink is one that uses a fan in combination with a heat-sink.
