Dummy Load. A dissipative but non-radiating device that has the impedance characteristics of an antenna or transmission line. Terminator is the common term for a cable load. Common impedance values for cable terminators are 50 and 75 ohms. Transmission line, cable terminations are shown below.

The chain is not required and only used to secure the load to the device or chassis so that it is not lost. This particular terminator example uses a BNC connector, for use with coax lines.

The fins on the TNC terminator are used for heat dissipation. Note the larger the physical size of the device the greater the power dissipation.

A Dummy Load can be made with any type of attached fixture. The two examples show a BNC and TNC connector style. However dummy loads are available for any coaxial type connector. Some dummy loads are designed to dissipate more power than other types, with a corresponding larger physical size, or with an integrated heat-sink [in the form of fins]. The dummy load graphic in the upper right has an integral flange so the load may be attach to a panel.

A Dummy Plug Connector is specifically designed to mate with another connector to perform one or more special functions, such as to act as a cover or shield, to short contacts, or to open or close electrical circuits, in or on another connector. A Dummy Connector Plug is not designed for direct attachment to a cable, conduit, or wire, and cannot be used as an electrical connector plug.

A Dummy Receptacle Connector is specifically designed to mate with a plug connector to perform one or more special functions, such as to support a plug connector when not in use, short contacts, or open or close electrical circuits, in or on another connector. A Dummy receptacle does not have provisions for attaching a wire, cable, or contact. It is designed to mount on a panel, bulkhead, wall, or chassis. A Dummy receptacle does not include connector shells which are merely used to position a plug connector on a panel.
