MIL-DTL 32139 [Nano D connectors], provide a good example of the levels of performance that can be achieved by a miniaturized connector.
Based on a pitch of .025”, these components are only a quarter of the volume and have 80% less mass than the MIL-DTL-83513 Micro D connectors they supersede (correspondingly smaller and lighter than the D-subminiature Mil-C-24308 connectors they were introduced to replace)

D-Sub common usage in computers;
9-pin DE D-Sub connectors are used as an RS232 Serial port
15-pin DA D-Sub connectors are used as a Video port
25-pin DB D-Sub connectors are used as a parallel / printer port
