Military connectors meet the requirements stated in one or more documents generated by the Department of Defense.
Commercial Dsub connectors may appear identical, but not meet all of the requirements stipulated by the military.
MIL-DTL 32139 [Nano D connectors], provide a good example of the levels of performance that can be achieved by a miniaturized connector.
Based on a pitch of .025 inches, these components are only a quarter of the volume and have 80% less mass than the MIL-DTL-83513 Micro D connectors they supersede
(correspondingly smaller and lighter than the D-subminiature Mil-C-24308 connectors they were introduced to replace)

D-Sub common usage in computers;
9-pin DE D-Sub connectors are used as an RS232 Serial port
15-pin DA D-Sub connectors are used as a Video port
25-pin DB D-Sub connectors are used as a parallel / printer port
Note that most people just use the term 'DB'; DB9, DB15, DB25.

Shell polarization is accomplished by a keystone shape ['D' shape] shell design, with polarization accomplished before engagement of the pins and sockets.
Which means that the connector shell mates before the pins of the connector mate with the sockets.
The keystone shape resembles the symbol of a wedge, or the capital letter D.
Refer to Military Connector Manufacturers for all the other styles of Military spec connectors.
