VPX Board Description

VPX is defined by VITA46. VPX boards may still follows the IEEE 1101 for board size but use different connectors.
The VPX board style defines a new direction for the VME bus standard and is not backward compatible with the VME specification.
However a VPX board may also use the REDI standard [VITA 48] for a mechanical form factor.
VPX cards may be either 3U or 6U high and 160mm deep. The new VPX connector runs up to 6.26Gbps
The old style DIN connectors used with VME are gone, and a new 20.3 mm Card Slot Pitch connector is used.
The original parallel interface is also gone, replaced by serial interfaces.
However, manufacturers do produce backplanes that handle both VME and VPX cards.
A Payload Card is the new name for VME cards used in a VXS backplane system.

A 3U size board will have 3 connectors; P0 and P1 to P2.
6U boards have 7 connectors; P0 and P1 to P6.
The P0 connector contains the power pins and some system level signals as found in the pin out below.
The P1 connector contains serial bus pins and user defined pins, and all other connectors contain user defined pins.

VPX J1/J2 Pinout, Signal Assignment.

VPX Connectors

VPX uses the MULTIGIG RT family of Connectors; there are 5 different styles of VPX connectors;
Half/Full Left Module, Half/Full Right Module, Center Module, Stand-alone module, & Power Module connector.
