Semiconductor - Digital - PC Chip Sets

This is a general listing of PC Chip Set Manufacturers used in the Personal Computer [PC].
The types of products or IC devices they produce are listed under the company name, in alphabetic order.
The first set of manufacturers produce Processor Chip-Sets for Intel and AMD processors. Chip Sets for processors are called either NorthBridge or Southbridge,
although these days the Northbridge functions have been ported to the processor.
The list that follows are companies which produce other types of chip-sets [HDD, Video, and so on].

Processor Chip Set Manufacturers

Intel {Desktop, Notebook, Workstation, Server, Embedded Chipsets for Intel processors}

nVidia

Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. 'SIS'

Personal Computer Chip Set Manufacturers

The chip sets listed below should also be listed on one of the PC bus pages listed on this site. Use the BUSES icon at the bottom of the page to navigate to a particular Personal Computer Bus page. Each PC bus page will include a listing of IC manufacturers producing integrated circuits for that particular bus interface.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 'AMD' {uP....K6 with EIDE / PCI / AGP / DDR ICs}

Analog Devices {DSL Chipsets, Video Encoder Products}

Cypress {Motherboard Clocks}

Marvell Technology Group Ltd. {Multi-Protocol Serial controllers, Direct Memory Access (DMA) engines, Peripheral device/interrupt controllers}

Mitsumi {Reset chips}

nVidia {3D Processors}

PLX Technology {PCI}

QLogic {SBus Interface IC Manufacturer}

QuickLogic {DRAM Controllers-System Controller ICs}

Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. 'SIS'

Texas Instruments "TI"

VIA Technologies Inc. {uP}

IP Core Vendors, Manufacturers

Other manufacture listings of Chip Sets, all located on :
PC-104 IC Manufacturers
PCI IC Manufacturers
ISA IC Manufacturers
IDE (ATA) IC Manufacturers
PCMCIA IC Manufacturers
Personal Computer {PC} Buses go obsolete every few years, so check the main Interface Bus page for additional computer buses.

Note that the selection of the chip-set is based, in part, on the processor used and over cost consideration of the mother-board.

This is a generic listing, the actual chip-sets change to fast to track by part number.
However the listing of vendors is a good place to start.

Block diagram of an AMP processor with North Bridge and South Bridge
Chipset Block Diagram

A typical block diagram for an AMD Athlon XP processor.
The AMD processor interfaces to the North Bridge over the FSB [Front Side Bus].
This particular diagram has a connection point from the North Bridge chip to an AGP expansion port.
The North bridge also interfaces to the processor, DDR memory bank and South bridge.
The South bridge connects to the PCI expansion slots, ATA connectors, USB ports and peripheral I/O.
The graph should date to the mid 2000s which would be the point at which the AGP slot was still being used.
The PCI expansion slot was also replaced by the PCIe expansion port around the same time.
Because all processors control the same basic peripheral devices, all block diagrams will appear similar.
