Power Over Ethernet Description

The Ethernet interface is a cable bus which runs over copper or fiber. However only the copper interfaces which use differential twisted pairs, use Power Over Ethernet [POE]. This page describes the POE interface. The 'normal' Ethernet network is defined by IEEE 802.3. A description of the 802.3 interface is found on the main Ethernet page. POE uses the spare wires not used by the Ethernet interface to deliver a DC voltage over the cable. Pins 4-5 and pairs 7-8 are used for POE, the pinout table is shown below

Power over Ethernet Bus Pin-Out

The pinout table lists one of three possible POE Alternative connections. The two other types will be listed soon.

Twisted Pair POE Ethernet [AII]
Pin # Signal name Function
1 TD+ Transmit Data
2 TD- Transmit Data
3 RD+ Receive Data
4 Positive Vport Power-Over-Ethernet
5 Positive Vport Power-Over-Ethernet
6 RD- Receive Data
7 Negative Vport Power-Over-Ethernet
8 Negative Vport Power-Over-Ethernet

Refer to the AUI Pinout page for the pin out of the AUI connector.
