On-Board Diagnostics [OBD] is a motor vehicle bus used to monitor engine functions. OBD II is the second generation of that interface. The graphic below details a male OBDII to Right Angle female DB9-pin Cable assembly.

There is only one size available for a 9-pin D connector, a DE size shell which defines the shell or exterior size of the connector. A nine position DE shell [referred to as a DB9] uses 22 size contacts. A standard 9-pin D type connector may be straight or right-angle, as used above.
Note that different connector styles are offered so that the OBD cable will mate with different types of instrumentation, which may use other connector styles.
