Power Supply Standards:

There are many standards which may have to be meet by the power supply depending upon the requirements of the equipment chassis. The Military standards only come into play with Mil-Spec jobs and are less common for commercial jobs. Power Supplies designed to medical standards are even less common. The Personal Computer power supply standards are very common in all but a few embedded PC designs. Keep in mind that the PC power supply specifications also define the wire size and connector style, which in turn defines the motherboard to power supply cabling [including wire color].

Design Hint; The point of listing standards related to power supplies is to indicate that just specifying a 500 watt power supply may not meet the requirements. If the chassis has to meet shock and Vibration tests as in MIL901, then so does the power supply.

Military Power Supply Standards:
MIL-STD-901D Shock Tests H.I. (HIGH-IMPACT) Shipboard Machinery, Equipment Systems and Requirements
MIL-STD-167-1 Mechanical Vibrations of Shipboard Equipment (type 1 - Environmental and type II internally Excited
MIL-STD-5400 Electronic Equipment, Aerospace, General Specification [See MIL-HDBK-5400]
MIL-STD-810E Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests
MIL-STD-46IE Requirements for the Control of Electromagnetic Interference Characteristics of Subsystems and Equipment
MIL-STD-704F Aircraft Electric Power Characteristics
MIL-STD-1275B Characteristics of 28 Volt Electrical Systems in Military Vehicles
