LDO: Low DropOut regulators reduce the difference between Input voltage [Vi], and Output voltage [Vo].
An LDO regulator will allow for less then a 1 volt difference between Input and Output voltages and still function.
A normal regulator would lose regulation if the input voltage fell within one volt of the output.

Note that there are a mix of IC functions listed above, but they all relate to flat panels.
