EEFL: External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp. EEFL devices are used for Back-lighting on LCD, and Light sources for Scanners. The source of the lamps light is produced by use of the external electrodes producing an electric field inside the lamp which in turn generates the plasma that lights the lamp.

CCFL and EEFL Fluorescent lighting was the dominate light source for LCD monitor back-lighting. However over the last few years that dominance is changing. Beginning in 2007 the usage of LEDs as the backlight began to increase, and as of 2011 backlights made of LEDs account for 50 percent of the market and are projected to account for 75 percent of the market by 2015. Although LED back-lights seem to cost a bit more, the LED systems consume less power and take-up less space than Fluorescent back-lighting.
