Mechanical Components
This page provides the mechanical out-line and Mechanical Dimensions for all the different styles of
Insulation Displacement Subminiature D connectors, commonly called D-Sub connectors. Insulation Displacement Definition [IDC].
This is the cable side of a cable assembly and not the board or PWB side of an interface.
An IDC connector is used with either a Flat cable or ribbon cable.
The graphic above gives the mechanical dimensions for a Insulation Displacement D-Subminiature
connector. D-Sub Connector manufacturers
Use the table below to obtain the absolute dimensions based on the size and number of pins used with the connector. Note the Number of contacts allowed; 9-pin, 15-pin, 25-pin, and 37-pins.

D-Sub connector common usage in personal computers;
None, IDC connectors are normally not found in commercial usage
Molded cable assemblies are preferred. However there are two interfaces that use Ribbon cable;
Both are hard drive cables: IDE Interface, and SCSI Interface.
D-Sub Connector Terms:
HD: High Density
Filtered: Suppress electro-magnetic interference (EMI) or radio
frequency (RFI)
High Density, HD: Pack 3 rows of pins into the next smaller 2-row
shell size, 15-pins into a 9 pin shell size
IDC: Insulation Displacement Connection [IDC Definition]
MIL: Military, as in Department of Defense Standard 'DOD'
MIL-C-24308/20: Connectors, Electrical, Rectangular, Miniature,
Polarized Shell, Rack and Reel, Shield, Straight, Deep
